“Basically, they’re salads with a whole-grain base of farro, barley, wheat-berries, or quinoa, with other ingredients like vegetables, fruit, or meat mixed in, that are served as a warm entrée,” says food blogger Amber Ketchum, M.D.S., R.D., owner of Homemade Nutrition.
And you definitely do want them. “These grains are hearty, filling, and an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, and protein,” Ketchum says. “If you’re trying to lose weight and/or build muscle, choosing meals that use these whole grains as a base can be an excellent choice because they also give you long-lasting energy.” ￼￼￼￼￼￼￼
