A: Bagged lettuces are perfect for busy guys trying to eat healthy. But some are definitely better for you than others. Rather than buying iceberg blends, which have few nutrients, opt for bags loaded with darker leaves such as romaine or spinach. The darker their color, the more vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants the leaves contain.
Instead of one large bag, buy two smaller ones—the lettuce will stay fresher and be less likely to spoil. And avoid premade salad kits that come with high calorie toppers like bacon, cheese, and croutons. You’re better off finishing your salads with lean proteins such as grilled chicken or salmon. Finally, since nothing ruins the low-calorie count of a salad faster than pouring on some creamy, gloppy dressing, stick with vinaigrettes or low-fat options.
