Hot Buttered Buns at The Woodsman, Portland, OR
In the Richmond neighborhood of Portland, Stumptown coffee founder Duane Sorenson delves into tavern fare at The Woodsman, and a few of the bar snacks are as perfect as his now-legendary java. The look and feel is updated inn, with dark-wood paneling and booths and ornately framed landscapes lining the walls. The bar has 14 beers on draft, but is most famous for its bloody mary, which comes topped with either a meatstick or a prawn. Here, the tomato-based cocktail isn’t just for brunch — any time of day it pairs perfectly with the trio of hot buttered buns. All served on milk buns dripping with butter, the dungeness crab is topped with pickled garlic vinaigrette, celery, and lemon. The pimento cheese comes with jalapeño jam, chive, and pepperoncini, and the amazing hot chicken bun is fried in spicy pork fat and comes with bread & butter pickles. Chef Andrew Gregory says the trio, "offer a taste of our full menu. They can easily be shared or eaten alone. You can drink, enjoy your friend's company, and have some snacks. And then, hopefully drink some more."
