Big Bob Gibson’s, Decatur, AL
Started in 1925 by “Big Bob” in his backyard, Gibson’s has been run by four generations since then, with Bob’s great-granddaughter’s husband, Chris Lilly, now running the hickory-smoking grill. The local sauce of choice in Alabama is white, but when Lilly’s team decided to update their Kansas City-style red sauce with a creation all their own, it was awarded “The Best Sauce on the Planet” at the American Royal International Barbecue Sauce Contest. Big Bob Gibson’s barbecue has won 10 State Championships and 10 World Championships and makes a stop through Alabama a must on this ribs pilgrimage.
