1. Maker’s Mark Private SelectGet It
For over 60 years, Maker’s Mark has made one thing and made it well: sweet, creamy wheated bourbon. The Loretto, Kentucky, distillery never varies its mashbill, and even rotates the barrels in its warehouses to ensure even maturation, but in the last few years it’s gotten more adventurous with aging. The Private Select cask program lets bars and retailers customize a finishing profile using a series of custom staves, and the annual (sometimes semi-annual) Wood Finishing Series showcases the variety that’s possible even with a single mashbill. The current Wood Finishing Series release, FAE-02, highlights the underappreciated qualities of mouthfeel and texture. And Maker’s Cask Strength, thanks to that soft wheat profile, is one of the best bourbons out there for sipping on the rocks.
