Thanks to Brooklyn’s Threes Brewing, there’s a Pride product we can really get behind: “Gender Neutral,” a new beer touting gender equality, with a portion of proceeds to be donated to the Human Rights Campaign.

The idea for the beer, a pale lager with lemon zest, had been knocking around at the brewery for some time before it was decided to make it a Gender Neutral beer, said Greg Doroski, head brewer. Like many good deeds of 2017, that part was inspired by the election.

“[After the election], we were sitting around [thinking], ‘What are we going to do?’ We thought the least we can do is find causes we all support and believe in, and do something.”

Gender Neutral is not the first politically minded or community-driven beer Threes has brewed — right after the election, the brewpub released “Courage, My Love,” a lager whose proceeds went to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Doroski said that although the donation from Courage, My Love, “wasn’t a ton of money” (about $1,300), the project got the brewery thinking about ways to support more causes.

“Gender Equality is a major issue, and it’s one of those things that’s amazing we’re still even having a discussion [about] these days. It seemed like it made sense to do another beer.”

Threes reached out to the Human Rights Campaign, which was receptive to partnering, and planned a 15-barrel batch, or about 130 cases (upwards of 3,000 beers). Presale of Gender Neutral is currently available online, and the brewery will also be hosting an official launch and pre-pride party leading up to NYC Pride on June 22. Ten percent of proceeds of both the Gender Neutral beer and the pre-pride party will go to the Human Rights Campaign.

Gender Neutral is a light and refreshing lager made with pilsner malt, flaked maize, Wakatu hops (a New Zealand varietal known for its zesty, floral aroma and bitter flavor) and lemon zest in the whirlpool (meaning after the boil, preserving the lemon aroma and leaving behind extra bitterness). The lager is lightly dry-hopped for a little extra zest.

Although we’re definitely pumped about the beer, we couldn’t help but ask Doroski for his stance on rainbow-washing during Pride Month: “For me, it goes back to the intention. In the context of our company, and of the other things we did [along with brewing a beer to donate financial proceeds to the ACLU, Threes also regularly donates beer to community groups], at a certain point all of that is marketing, but the intent is there to help and stake a position that this is something that’s important.”

Doroski added that at the end of the day, “it’s very much up to [the consumer] to decide for themselves what’s important.” We couldn’t agree more. As long as you don’t completely miss the message, like these women.
