Diageo Announces Plans for Guinness Brewery in Maryland

Good news for Guinness lovers: The producers of the iconic Irish stout, Diageo, announced plans this week to open a new Guinness brewery and visitor center stateside, selecting Relay, Maryland, as the future location for its iconic brand.

Diageo Beer Company USA recently celebrated positive half-year financial results, which inspired the decision to announce their future plans for expansion.

Guinness will join many other beer brands that have built additional locations on the East Coast of the U.S., as breweries attempt to expand distribution and reach more beer tourism in Eastern states.

The new Guinness facility would include a mid-sized brewery and visitor experience along with an innovation microbrewery, much like the original setup at St. James’ Gate in Dublin, Ireland. The Relay location will produce new Guinness beers created for the U.S. market, while the company’s stouts will continue to be brewed at St. James’ Gate, says Diageo.

According to Diageo, the new brewery, along with Diageo’s existing packaging and warehousing operation there, will reach approximately $50 million in the company’s investment in Relay.

Though the plans are not yet finalized — according to the company, solidifying plans “is still contingent on reaching agreement on several considerations” — the new brewery would mark the brand’s return to U.S. soil after its original location closed 63 years ago (the historic Calvert Distillery, which Diageo owns, originally opened in 1933).

Along with bringing Guinness closer to home by introducing new, U.S.-exclusive brands to the U.S. market, the facility is estimated to generate 40 jobs in brewing, warehousing, and packaging (canning, bottling, and kegging are possibilities), along with an additional 30 jobs via the Guinness visitor experience.

The project would also create a significant number of construction jobs, Diageo said, further stating that it would make every attempt to hire as many local firms as possible (which we believe, considering their recent recognitions as one of the most sustainable companies in the world, as well as one of the best places to work).

“Opening a Guinness brewery and visitor center in the U.S. will enable us to collaborate with fellow brewers and interact with the vibrant community of beer drinkers,” said Tom Day, president, Diageo Beer Company, USA. “Given the success of our Open Gate Brewery in Dublin and the popularity of beer tourism in the U.S., we are confident that Americans will welcome the opportunity to come experience Guinness brewing in Baltimore County.”

Guinness is currently brewed in 49 countries and sold in over 150 countries worldwide.
