Diageo, the world’s largest producer of spirits and a major beer producer based in London, was named in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Companies in the World.
Diageo, which was named No. 64 in the list of 100, is the producer of such recognizable brands as Guinness, Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Captain Morgan, and Tanqueray.
The Global 100 is an annual list created by Corporate Knights, a Toronto-based media and investment research firm that uses publicly available data to rate the world’s largest firms on key measures such as management of resources, finances, and employees. The report is released each January at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to Corporate Knights, around 4,000 of the world’s mid-, large-, and mega-cap companies were considered for the report (all companies had a market capitalization in excess of $2 billion).
Diageo’s sustainability and responsibility strategies include: contributing to the World Health Organization's goal of reducing alcohol-related harm by 10 percent by communicating about alcohol responsibly and tackling misuse through effective programs and policies; reducing, returning, and replenishing water while investing in water stewardship; empowering the women and men in their workforce, or “value network, from the farmers who grow our crops to the bartenders who sell our brands”; and by working with suppliers who provide locally and sustainably sourced materials that have a positive impact on the communities and environment in which Diageo operates.
Diageo was also recently recognized for being a “Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign for the ninth consecutive year last year.
