Protein bars are a convenient snack that, not only, curb hunger, but provide your body with muscle building protein. There are dozens of brands and hundreds of different bars on the market to choose from, with flavors ranging from cappuccino to peanut butter and jelly. With a price range between $2 and $5 a pop, these nutrient dense snacks usually give you what you pay for, but that doesn’t mean you can drop $20 a week on protein bars. While searching the web I came across a recipe for recession-proof, homemade protein bars. The recipe required few ingredients and was relatively simple to make, which was important to me as my culinary skills teeter on the pathetic. Homemade Protein Bars from Bodybuilding.com: 1 Cup of Oatmeal 1 Cup of Skim Milk 1 ¾ Cups of Peanut Butter 4 Scoops of Whey Protein (I opted for Chocolate/Mint Muscle Milk) A sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar for taste Combine the ingredients in a large bowl and mix well: (Even I could not mess this up)
I then spread the mix evenly into a glass dish and placed it in the refrigerator for the required eight hours. OK, actually my patience got the best of me and an hour later in, I went for a taste. It still had the consistency of cookie dough, but the chocolate-peanut butter flavor was worthy of licking the spoon. After the full eight hours, I cut my bars, wrapped them up in tin foil and patted myself on the back. The bars were chewy, full of flavor and not chalky. They also had 22 grams of protein per serving. Eager to show off my newest creation I threw a bar in my bag and made my way into the office. My excitement would be short lived as an hour later the bar had returned to the consistency of cookie dough. The recipe never mentioned it, but the bar had to remain refrigerated. This would certainly hurt the convenience factor, which is what made protein bars so enticing in the first place. I had succeeded in making a delicious protein-packed snack but that’s all it would remain. A bit discouraged, I have decided to leave the protein bar manufacturing to the professionals. But I did come across a recipe for protein pancakes. Stay tuned.
