Just as you’d top up your car before a long journey, you need to fuel your body if you plan on putting in hours on the bike. “It’s important to take in foods that allow for prolonged steady-state activity, as well as surges for breakaways, attacks, and mountain passes,” says USA Cycling coach Jay Dicharry, M.P.T., S.C.S. “While Tour riders have been depicted as superathletes, their diet during race days is actually full of pretty basic, real food—they just happen to eat a lot of it!”
