Fenway Frank at The Commons, San Diego
Skip the hot dog carts. After a day of surfing at Ocean Beach or Black’s Beach, head to the historic Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego, which is a hub for stellar eats. You’ll find a simple, but still gourmet, hot dog option on the menu at The Commons, a local favorite with a generous Happy Hour. The classic Fenway Frank —owner Jake Pescatello is a Boston native, so he wanted to pay homage to his hometown — is an all-beef hotdog with a hint of garlic that arrives dressed with jalapeño relish, pepper jack cheese, diced onions, and spicy mustard. Pair the hot dog with another childhood classic: Crispy tater tots. Complete your order with a local beer or stick with the jalapeño theme and order a “Skinny Scorpion,” mixed with tequila, jalapeños, cilantro, fresh lime, agave nectar, and a splash of soda.
