“The French press is hands-down the best way to make coffee,” says Todd Carmichael, co-founder of top coffee roaster Le Colombe Torrefaction. Here he give Men’s Fitness readers advice on how to brew the perfect cup of coffee.
Get the Water Temp Right “Don’t boil the water,” Carmichael says, advising taking it off the heat just as it approaches the boiling point.
Choose the Right Grind The French press is made for a coarse grind, “but I break that rule often,” he says. “I like silt in my coffee.”
Don’t Stir “The coffee is going to cake on top, but inside, bits are slowly falling through the water,” Carmichael says. “Just leave it—it will make itself.”
Be Patient Once you’ve added the water, put the lid back on and wait it out, following the standard four-minute rule, he recommends.
Go MacGyver Since most presses reach only halfway down, “take the lid off so you can wring out the flavors at the bottom of the pot,” Carmichael says.
