We'll be the first to admit it: It's hard to beat Heinz. There's not a home cook anywhere who could re-create that consistency, the sweet-sour-salty balance, the exact taste we're all nostalgic for. But that's not the point. Making condiments is a way to mix it up, experiment in the kitchen, and see what happens when you add red wine or jalapenos to ketchup (usually good things). Are they healthier? Arguably; at the least they'll have a bit less sodium and sugar. But more importantly they're fun to make, and let's face it, it's impressive to bust out your homemade mustard, ketchup, and mayo at your next BBQ.
