The Four Rules of Alcohol

1. Your guests will ask what they should bring. Never say food. There is no quality control at a potluck. So if guests must bring something, make sure it's booze.
2. There must be a keg. Contact your favorite local craft brewery and procure a pony of its killer pale ale. In addition to tasting better, a keg, unlike a cooler, does not have to be constantly restocked.
3. Break out the home brew. If you have any mad-scientist friends, ask them (or at least the ones who know what they are doing) to create their own special brew for the event. They'll jump at the chance, and it'll make the party that much more special.
4. Serve punch. "A bowl of punch shared by friends sets the mood for a memorable get-together," says Adam Collison, co-owner of The Drink in Brooklyn. Even better, it frees you from spending all day mixing cocktails. Collison suggests his tequila-and-watermelon concoction, the Mutiny (recipe below).
- Makes 30 oz, or about 6 servings
- 10 oz fresh watermelon juice
- 10 oz silver tequila
- 5 oz fresh lime juice
- 5 oz simple syrup
- ⅛ oz rhubarb bitters
To make watermelon juice, remove rind from seedless watermelon, cut into chunks, and blend until pulverized. Combine all ingredients in a punch bowl, stir, and add ice. Garnish with a handful of mint, gently bruised.Back to top
