Flatter your guests with good lighting.
“The more sources of light, the better,” says van Wyck. Soft lighting from a bunch of sources can make your guests look ten years younger. “I try to have as many candles as possible, at the level of guests faces. But you don’t want to do an Edie Sedgwick at the Chelsea Hotel, and burn the place down." Consider LED candles instead. Of course when you’re throwing a holiday party, you’re likely to have string lights around, which will help immensely. If you have to use overhead lighting, dial down the dimmers even more than you think you might need to.
