Rip up your standard invite list and cast a wider net.
NYC Event planner Bronson van Wyck has designed bashes for President Obama, Madonna, Beyoncé — and innumerable soirees for close friends — and says getting the right mix of guests takes some forethought. “You have to go about it as if you were casting a scene,” he says. “It’s one of those weird words nobody really says out loud, but you want to create frisson.” In other words: Get a diverse mix of people and hope for sparks. “You want women with a past, men with a future, and a bunch of fun gay guys that will make them actually talk to each other,” says van Wyck. Let people bring a guest. Hell, let the guest bring a guest. And here’s a key to breaking the ice: Introduce the guests yourself. “As the law-giver of the night, you’re basically blessing people to interact.” Either welcome guests at the front door, or hold court somewhere deep in your house or apartment — guests will search you out, and interact with each other in the process.
