You may not need a scientific study in order to enjoy eating cake for breakfast, but when a study says that it’s fair game, it helps with the post-binge guilt. Even better is the fact that you could lose weight from that early-morning indulgence.
Researchers looked at 193 obese adults and found that those who ate a high-protein, high-carbohydrate breakfast, along with a dessert, stuck with their diets and kept the weight off longer. The other adults in the study, who ate a low-carb/low-calorie breakfast without the sweets, didn’t have as much success.
Health officials have long touted the importance of eating breakfast when it comes to weight loss. People who skip breakfast tend to be heavier than those who eat a healthy breakfast.
The new study shows that when and what you eat play a large role in helping you shed the pounds. A high carb/protein breakfast is likely to keep you full throughout the day. In addition, the occasional cookie, cake or doughnut can help you stymie the cravings that cause you to overeat.
Not everyone is buying this, of course. Nutritionists are divided on whether cake for breakfast should become enshrined in the government’s food pyramid—or food plate, as it’s now called.
While the current study shows that you can, in fact, lose weight by eating dessert with a healthy breakfast, others indicate that too much refined flour and sugar can be bad for you.
The best advice: eat a healthy breakfast every day, and don’t feel guilty about the occasional slice of chocolate cake!
