The brain-freezing drink, loved by children of all ages for its strange colors and wild tastes, has 50 percent fewer calories, according to the 7-Eleven website. To celebrate, they’re offering free 7.11-oz. Slurpees on May 23 from 11 AM to 7 PM.
While 7-Eleven has previously sold Slurpees made with saccharin regionally, this is its first national low-calorie drink. The Slurpee Lite, made with Splenda, is targeted toward female consumers with the line: “All flavor. No sugar.”
An 8-ounce mango-flavored Slurpee Lite has 20 calories, compared to 66 calories in an 8-ounce sugar-filled Fanta Wild Cherry Slurpee. The nutritional value, however, remains the same—nothing.
The move is likely more about the company’s bottom line than the bulging bottoms of Americans. “We talked to a group who said they would drink Slurpees more often if we take out the sugar and reduce the calories,” Laura Gordon, vice president of brand innovation, told USA Today.
Now that 7-11 has figured out how to increase Slurpee consumption, what can they do to get their customers to exercise more? Maybe build Slurpee machines into treadmills.
