Good news in the fight against obesity. By the end of 2013, Snickers King Size bars will go the way of New Coke and other products permanently erased from our sugary memories.
You will also have to work harder at getting your sugar fix as Mars—the manufacturer of Snickers—reduces all of its chocolate bar portions to under 250 calories. This comes as the company attempts to rebrand itself as supporting healthy lifestyles in the face of a growing obesity epidemic.
“Mars chocolate products should be enjoyed in moderation as part of a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle,” the company said in a statement.
Other products—such as M&M’s and Twix—are unaffected by the changes because they already fall under the 250-calorie limit. Regular Snickers and Milky Way bars, however, will need to trim some weight in order to make the cut.
One-third of adult Americans and 17% of children and adolescents are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control. As health officials and politicians debate possible bans or taxes on unhealthy foods—such as giant candy bars—it’s in the best interest of food manufacturers to appear to be supporting the fight against obesity.
The King Size Snickers are not completely gone, though. The company has simply replaced one giant bar with two smaller ones—called “2toGo” bars—with a resealable package. This gives you the choice to save one for later.
