The Season 6 premiere of Game of Thrones can't come fast enough for fans, but in the meantime, Brewery Ommegang has something new to literally wet their appetites. The Belgian-style brewery has announced its newest beer inspired by the HBO show, Seven Kingdoms Hoppy Wheat. The golden ale will be a hybrid between a traditional Belgian wheat beer and American IPA, clocking 6.9-percent alcohol.
Seven Kingdoms Hoppy Wheat is the sixth beer in the Upstate New York brewery's series of Games of Thrones ales and follows the dark, earthy Three-Eyed Raven from 2015. While the last beer was a more traditional Belgian ale, with a little extra kick from rye malt, the new brew sounds like a bigger creative leap. "The world of Westeros is varied and complex, and this varietal embodies those characteristics while offering a new and unique taste to beer drinkers," said Josh Goodstadt, HBO's Vice President of Global Licensing.
Ommegang is adding a blend of five American hop varieties (Bravo, Centennial, Citra, Cascade, and Columbus) known for big floral and citrus flavor, while using its spicy house yeast strain and amping up the alcohol for a Belgian wheat. Seven Kingdoms Hoppy Wheat will hit shelves and tap lines in March 2016, about a month ahead of the premiere. It's being packaged in 750ml corked bottles with a suggested price of $10.
