We're just weeks away from the fifth season premiere of Game of Thrones and that can only mean one thing: The next Game of Thrones beer is coming. Ommegang's new Three-Eyed Raven black saison is just the antidote to months of debating where Tyrion is headed, how much the Mountain can lift, and who’s the next to die.
Now, you can discuss the brew. This 7.2-percent beer is the Ommegang's first big attempt at a dark saison, which adds roasted malts to the normally bright gold ale. The beer was developed around Bran Stark's storyline, which has seen the young prince dreaming of and chasing a three-eyed raven since season one. "When we zeroed in on Bran's storyline with HBO," says Mike McManus, Ommegang's innovation manager, "we knew this was the perfect opportunity to brew something with many different characteristics."
We got a bottle ahead of the release and can assure you, it's not just clever packaging aimed to hook diehard fans. It's a masterful beer, and our favorite of the Game of Thrones line — which includes Take the Black Stout, and the more recent Valar Morghulis Belgian dubbel — thanks to a rich and intriguing character in a highly-drinkable beer. The seldom-seen twist on a traditional farmhouse ale combines the cocoa, roasted, and fruity flavors of an abbey-style dubbel (think Chimay Red) with spicy hops and a dry body you'd find in a beer like the classic Saison Dupont.
Ommegang scheduled the Three-Eyed Raven release for April 6, just ahead of the April 12 premiere of Game of Thrones' fifth season. For fans that can't wait, the brewery also has launch events starting March 21.
