Although our way of exploring beer’s significance in society has largely been through years of tastings, travels, and agricultural explorations, beer is also an integral part of our country’s history, sociology, and economy. Three Pittsburgh locals are aiming to further shine a light on beer's historical importance with an Indiegogo campaign set to launch on Tuesday, October 18: Brew: The Museum of Beer, a Pittsburgh-based beer museum “dedicated to the fascinating story of beer.”
As we reported earlier this year, Brew: The Museum of Beer aims to create a monument to the world’s most popular beverage. After three years of research, planning, and garnering community support, founders Dr. Joe McAllister, Matthew Sherwin, and Denis Meinert are ready to put their project’s funding into the public’s hands, who they hope will help bring the dream to life.
According to brewmuseum.com, the museum will encompass a 50,000-square-foot space in or near Downtown Pittsburgh, an area currently touting such cultural attractions as the Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Science Center, and John Heinz Regional Historical Center. The space will feature a variety of exhibits (possibilities include Corporatization of Beer, Women and Beer, and Beer and Your Health), a Brewers Wall, featuring every brewery currently in operation in the U.S., and of course, a 300-seat gastropub to help tourists and beer enthusiasts appreciate the beverage that is responsible for civilization as we know it.
Though the idea isn’t new (we’ve already been blessed with the Museum of Beer & Brewing in Milwaukee, the National Brewery Museum, a joint venture between the Potosi Foundation and the American Breweriana Association in Wisconsin, and the Chicago Brewseum is also in its funding stages), we’re still pretty stoked about the possibility of a bona fide building devoted to the historical, scientific, artistic, and cultural aspects of beer here on the East Coast.
