Brewer: Brouwerij Van Eecke
Style: Belgian IPA
Bracing bitterness and floral and spicy hop character don’t leap to mind when beer drinkers think of Belgian beers, but that’s the central appeal of one of our favorites. Browerij Van Eeck is located in the city of Poperinge, the heart of a small but dedicated hop region. Hommel Bier was introduced in 1981 to showcase the area’s bounty of the area, but also broke ground as the first Belgian IPA before U.S. brewers started hopping tradition styles up to American standards. The hop attack begins with a sharp spiciness in the flavor and ends with a bitter and dry finish. As with any hoppy beer freshness is paramount. We’ve had better luck with it on draft in the states, but when visiting Belgium we recommend enjoying it in the bottle as well.
