Fans of Boston beer and baseball will want to get on deck for this one — for one day only, Samuel Adams is hosting an event to release Big Hapi, a beer brewed in honor of retired Red Sox home-run hitter David "Big Papi" Ortiz.
Samuel Adams announced on their blog yesterday that the Boston brewery location will host the release of Big Hapi, a double India Pale Ale, on November 4, selling just 541 bottles, one for each of Ortiz’ home runs. The proceeds will go to The David Ortiz Children’s Fund, an organization aimed to help children in New England and the Dominican Republic attain access to critical health care.
Says Samuel Adams’ blog:
“David Ortiz has had a big impact on Boston both on and off the field – which we think obviously calls for a bold, celebratory brew. For one day only, we’re releasing Big Hapi, a bold mango juice–infused double IPA, to pay tribute to one of the best athletes to ever play the game and thank him for all the incredible memories he’s given Red Sox fans. It’s also the perfect beer to enjoy during the most exciting week in baseball.”
“Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to watch David Ortiz hit homers out of the park while enjoying a cold Sam Adams," said Boston Beer Co. founder Jim Koch. "Now I’m excited to toast to his record-setting career with Big Hapi Double IPA. We’re thrilled to honor our hometown baseball hero by doing what we do best, brewing beer, and giving craft beer and baseball fans a commemorative brew to honor an extraordinary legend.”
Big Hapi is of course a play on Ortiz's nickname, Big Papi, and on the generous amount of hops used in the brew—Big Hapi is brewed with more than five pounds of hops per barrel, then dry-hopped with five varieties of Pacific Northwest hops and infused with mango juice. The beer will be available in 24-oz bottles, on sale for $29 exclusively at the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery location on Friday, November 4, at 4 p.m.
