Gourmet fast food burger joint Shake Shack is ditching its cashiers in one NYC location. The restaurant has announced that it will be going to a kiosk-only check out system where customers will order from the kiosk or from their mobile phones and cash will not be accepted.
The cashless operation will be located in Astor Place, where “hospitality champs” will be awaiting at kiosks to help guide customers through the ordering process. They are not cashiers. In a statement the company’s CEO Randy Garutti said of the kiosk move “We’re excited to lead with kiosk-only ordering, putting control of the Shake Shack experience in our guest’s hands, and [developing] an optimized kitchen with increased capacity for mobile orders and eventual delivery integration to support ongoing digital innovation.”
When orders are placed, they will go directly to the kitchen. Garutti told CNBC this will “eliminate friction time.” He said this will allow the front-of-house staff to have greater focus on the customer and give the kitchen the ability to only focus on the food.
The experimental location will be opening later in October.
