Brewer: Lost Abbey
Style: American Barleywine
Lost Abbey’s brewmaster Tomme Arthur named his barrel-aged barleywine after what distillers call the portion of spirits that vanish over time from their barrels. Science teaches us that the spirits are lost due to absorption into the wood and evaporation, but “Angel’s Share” does have a ring to it. Any angels visiting Lost Abbey’s cellar might be forgiven for taking seconds of Arthur’s exquisite bourbon barrel-aged Angel’s Share barleywine. The sweet, malty base is layered with dark fruits, caramel, and vanilla from the wood, recalling superior port and sherry.
