Style: English Barleywine
Deschutes Brewery’s limited edition Mirror Mirror was conceived as a double strength iteration of its popular Mirror Pond Pale Ale. While Mirror Pond is a hop-driven American pale ale, Mirror Mirror falls more comfortably into the English barleywine tradition which places less emphasis on bitterness and hop flavor than its American counterpart. Deschutes takes a lighter touch with its barrel-aging as well. Rather than opting for the more pronounced oak of a bourbon barrel, Deschutes opts for 10 months of aging in Pino Noir, Tempranillo, and Malbec wine barrels. To tame the barrel contributions, Deschutes blends in equal parts of non-barrel aged beer. The final Mirror Mirror is big on fruity, toffee malts, with vanilla and grape notes.
