New research confirms what we’ve known for a while: A diet rich in lean protein, healthy fats, and fruits and vegetables is good for your brain. In a review published in the journal Epidemiology, researchers examined 12 studies and concluded that strong adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet was associated with better cognitive function, lower decline in brain activity, and a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

“While the link between adherence to a Mediterranean diet and dementia risk is isn’t new, ours is the first study to systematically analyze all existing evidence,” says lead study author Iliana Lourida in a news release.
Typically, those following a Mediterranean diet limit their intake of red meat and high-sugar foods, and focus instead on fish, eggs, poultry, fresh fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats, like olive oil.
