1. Kerouac’s – Baker, Nevada
Two years ago, New Yorkers Jake Cerese and Kate Claeys stumbled across the old Silver Jack Inn in Baker on their way to Great Basin National Park to watch a meteor shower. “We didn’t see meteors, but we saw a Chinese rocket re-enter the atmosphere,” says Cerese. The debris formed a fireball visible across five western states. “We had no idea what it was, but it was spectacular.” Inspired, and looking for a change, the two ditched their careers and purchased the Silver Jack, gut-renovating the nine-room motel and adjoining bar and restaurant. They renamed the bar Kerouac’s and the hotel became the Stargazer Inn. The pair now churn out cocktails that are simple twists on classics but made with quality spirits and fresh fruit juices that, after a day walking in the Great Basin dust, can taste otherworldly.
ORDER: The Neal Cassady, made with Beefeater Gin, fresh lemon juice, and wildflower honey.
