Auchentoshan American Oak
Distilled In: Glasgow
Average Price (Per Under the Label): $50
Looks Like: Golden honey.
Smells Like: Coconut and fruit, though a strong whiff of bourbon-like booze fights its way to the surface.
Tastes Like: Citrus, then spice, then vanilla. It’s as if there were three stages of flavor for each time this new Aucentoshan variety was distilled. You can credit (or blame, depending on how traditional you are about scotch) that to the booze being aged in North American ex-bourbon oak barrels, which tilts American Oak toward its aforementioned sweetness. For those with an open mind, it’s evocative and refreshing, and for those looking to convert their friends to single-malt adoration, this might be a good introduction.
Goes Well With: A summer salad with roasted tomatoes and vinegary dressing. Admit it: Now your curiosity’s piqued.
