Zanzibar’s in Des Moines, Iowa
You better get there early if you want to grab a seat at this popular Des Moines hub. Mosey up to its bar and order the Linda Special (that’s local speak for toast smothered with cream cheese, onions, and melted cheese) before sitting down and taking a break from screens and reading the morning paper. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself following your nose and returning in the afternoon when you smell them roasting beans in-house all the way down Ingersoll ave. Former Iowa resident and Zanzibar regular John Lonsdale tells us the best time to go is in the afternoon when the sun streams in through the windows, illuminating the stained glass panel and casting its light on the entranceway plants and bustling hub for all the beans. If you like sweet drinks, be sure to try their Mocha Mex. Calories don’t count in Iowa, right?
