4. Slow Boat Brewery
Slow Boat’s original taproom was another hutong hideaway in the Dongcheng neighborhood, but it closed to open a three-floor flagship brewpub in Sanlitun in 2016. While it lost some of its mystique, it’s expanded to become one of the biggest craft breweries in Beijing. All of Slow Boat’s beers—eight core brews (like the Captain’s Pale Ale and Monkey’s Fist IPA), six seasonal ones, and five bottled beers and ciders—are made on site, without chemicals, preservatives, or unwanted artificial additives. There’s also a menu full of greasy, fried food that’ll help soak up all that alcohol—and make American bar-goers feel right at home.
