It’s easy to forget since rum is so often associated with tiki drinks and piña coladas, but the liquor is actually a bit of a badass. During Prohibition, rum was smuggled into the United States from the Caribbean—helping birth the cocktail movement.
With bootlegged barrels of rum, bartenders in speakeasies began experimenting with simple cocktails like the daiquiri. (Not that sickly sweet frozen pink drink; but the cocktail made with fresh lime juice, rum, and simple syrup.)
Suffice to say, rum cocktails are here to stay. Whether it’s National Rum Day or a regular Thursday, these great cocktails you can make at home are worth celebrating.
