It’s easy to forget since rum is so often associated with tiki drinks and piña coladas, but the liquor is actually a bit of a badass. During Prohibition, rum was smuggled into the United States from the Caribbean—helping birth the cocktail movement.
With bootlegged barrels of rum, bartenders in speakeasies began experimenting with simple cocktails like the daiquiri. (Not that sickly sweet frozen pink drink; but the cocktail made with fresh lime juice, rum, and simple syrup.)
