The Foodie: Abruzzo, Italy
Why Go: Tuscany has long been the Italian destination for oenophiles, but let’s be honest: Diane Lane kind of ruined that with Under the Tuscan Sun. It’s been over a decade since the film came out, but it’s still a little touristy for our tastes. Better off heading for Abruzzo, home of the underrated Montepulciano d’Abruzzo varietal. Its also a fantastic foodie town. Don’t believe us? Believe Mario Batali, who cited Abruzzo as the apex of Italian cooking (south of Bologna, anyway).
Top Wine: Villa Gemma Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. The competition is stiff, but for our money this is the most memorable Montepulciano d’Abruzzo of the region.
Don’t Miss: Make a weekend out of it and visit the famous family-owned Masciarelli winery, located in the Abruzzese countryside. Their winery and attached hotel, Catello di Semivicoli, includes an open-fire kitchen, an olive oil making room, an old barrel room, and of course, lots of wine-tasting.Back to top
