The Locavore: Barossa, Australia
Why Go: Australia is probably about half wine country at this point, and it’s hard to go wrong at any of their top wine-producing regions — New South Wales, Victoria, any of the Western or Southern Australian growing valleys — but Barossa stands out not just because of its commitment to wine, but its commitment to food. Barossa has been undergoing a local food revolution, focusing on homegrown, farm-to-table meat and produce, which also makes it fantastic food and wine pairings, made by the community, for the community (and tourists, of course).
Top Wine: First Drop Fat of the Land Ebenezer Single Vineyard Shiraz. One of the finest Shirazes you can find in the region, it encompasses Barossa’s locavore spirit in a bottle.
Don’t Miss: The Angaston Farmer’s Market. Sure, it’s not a tasting room (or as they call it in Australia, a “cellar door”), but it’s the best place to find the freshest produce in the region, and provides a great introduction to Barossa’s lively food culture.
