Russell’s Reserve 1998
Official Word: Bottled at the absolute peak of maturity according to the company, this is the smallest release of bourbon ever to come from Wild Turkey’s warehouses. Just 2,070 bottles are available of a liquid master distiller Eddie Russell says reached a sweet spot around the 15-year mark.
Word on the Street: Competing with its cousin Wild Turkey Master’s Keep, it’s the second big release this year to draw attention. But with just over two thousand bottles on the market, it’s much harder to find. Definitely doable, but expect to spend a day or two tracking it down.
The Final Word: They really did stop it at the perfect time. It needs water or ice at this proof, but when you do it: Wow. Toffee and caramel notes, citrus peel, and a vanilla-filled finish. Even some dried cherry flavors, if you take your time. And you should.
