One of the more refreshing parts about our monthly The Last Word column is asking luminaries in the fields of adventure, entertainment, and medicine to describe their trusted hangover cures. Television’s best-known survivalist told us to go for a run and follow it with a swim in a cold river. (Disclosure: We begrudgingly tried it, substituting the Atlantic Ocean for a free-flowing rivulet.) But when Craig Venter, the man who unlocked the human genome, said the scientific remedy is, in fact, more alcohol, we dialed mixologist John Meyers, bartender at the Corner Room in Portland, Maine, to concoct a sure-fire solution. Here’s what he came up with.
• 5 oz beef bouillon
• 1 oz vodka
• Dash lemon juice
• 1/4 tsp celery salt
• Worcestershire sauce, to taste
• Tabasco, to taste
Shake over ice. Strain into ice-filled highball glass. Garnish with black pepper and lime.
