Chamois (Squaw Valley, California)
From the late Shane McConkey to 2006 Olympic gold medalist Julia Mancuso, Squaw Valley has been home to some of the world’s best skiers. Luckily, the iconic Lake Tahoe resort’s après-ski scene ain’t no slouch either.
Direct all thanks to Chamois, a classic A-frame just off Squaw’s tram that’s been attracting a lively mix of skiers since first tapping the kegs in 1969. The ski world’s answer to the swim-up bar, popping out of your boards and onto the joint’s front porch is de rigueur for Squaw regulars, who affectionately refer to their favorite watering hole as the “Shammy.” Starting at 3 p.m. on any given weekend, you’ll run into local ski bums, crowds of 20-something shares up from San Francisco, and a bevy of Facebook millionaires, all downing cheap pints of Budweiser (thanks to the Buddy Pass, $40 is good for 20 pints) and hot dogs on the front porch. Pizza and wings are popular inside the lofted bar, but with views of the craggy K-22 and other surrounding peaks, not to mention NorCal sunshine that can feel downright Caribbean, you’d be a fool to step foot inside.Back to top
