The Rise of Bottled Cocktails
Mixing the perfect cocktail is a skill that, like whipping up airy soufflés, many lack. That’s why we bend elbows at bars instead of making do with middling cocktail mixes — which we’ll still screw-up. Recently, distilleries have eliminated guesswork by bottling ready-to-drink cocktails like rock and rye, a blend of rye whiskey, rock candy, citrus or fruit, and assorted spices. Once a 19th-century barroom staple, the mixed cocktail is making a comeback with sublime modern examples such as Hochstadter’s Slow and Low and Mister Katz’s Rock and Rye.
