U.S. Overtakes France as the Largest Wine Consumer
While craft beer and bourbon receive the lion’s share of media fanfare (we’ll trade you a kidney for a case of Heady Topper or Pappy Van Winkel), it’s wine that’s quietly generated one of the year’s biggest developments. After the stats were tabulated, America finally topped France as the world’s biggest consumer of wine. While this shift speaks to the changing consumption habits of American and European wine drinkers, the top ranking is also due to our nation’s size. The average French citizen still drinks nearly 1.2 bottles of wine weekly, around six times that of the typical American — there’s work left to do.
