First, there was the bearded brewmaster who tried to serve up a beer that used wild yeast cultured from beard hairs he plucked from his own chin garden. Then a Polish weirdo attempted to make vagina yeast beer a thing. (Breathe easy, it appears the brewery, Order of Yoni, squelched its fundraising campaign after barely reaching 1 percent of its goal to mass market a sour-tasting beer that swabbed a Czech model for the organic ingredients).
Now the Aussies have brought to life yet another reason to gag: Brewers are digging into their beer bellies, and pulling out samples of lint from their belly buttons. Or, as they try to spin it, their “belly button fluff.” The brewers at 7 Cent Brewery think they’re the first in the world to make beer fermented from yeast captured from their own belly buttons. They’ve aptly named it “Belly Button Beer!” A promotional video shows the lint being swabbed from the button of a hairy belly, with the following script: “Sometimes to go forward you need to be a little bit backward.”
They describe the style of beer with a lot of “ish” notations. It’s new-worldish. And, a Belgian-ish Witbier. Other ingredients, in addition to the belly button crumbs, are fresh orange zest and toasted coriander seeds.
“The yeast exhibits qualities of Belgian beer with the key characteristics being spiciness, clove, and light banana esters,” their website says. “The orange zest and coriander seeds were used to help complement the yeast and a calculated amount of Riwaka and Mosaic hops were added to increase the citrus qualities and give it a refreshing hop kick.” Four grains round out the mix, with barley, wheat, oats, and rye all coming together for this unique brew.
Their muse was actually the Beard Beer, fermented from yeast captured from the brewer’s beard. They tried the beer and started brainstorming on from what other body parts (we're guessing beer was involved in this creative session) one could capture yeast to brew beer, with the idea that yeast is yeast no matter where it's derived.
They say their Belly Button Beer will make its debut at the 2016 Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular, which happens in Melbourne and Sydney later this month, and Auckland in June.
