VW Arteon R-Line
VW is rebooting its entire lineup, and that includes a near clone of the Audi A5 Sportback. For the non-crossover lover, the challenge with sedans is simple: the trunk. America loves crossovers because they’re hatchbacks, and hatchbacks are easier to use for hauling all your toys, from golf bags to skis to bikes to strollers. But crossovers mostly drive like what they are: tall, kind-of gawky cars. If your other car is a vintage Miata, you want a family car that’s still fun. Enter the Arteon. Here it’s coming with bigger wheels with fatter rubber and paddle shifters for the eight-speed auto-box mated to the 270 hp four-cylinder engine, but no suspension tuning that you’d want from a legit sports edition. Still, with an entry price of $37,000 and optional AWD, there’s a lot to like.
