Hardware and Accessories
All the oddball tchotchkes that adorn old houses — from electrical outlet and switch plates, to window locks, to clothes hangers, to door stops — are valuable, simply because they don’t make them like they used to. “For instance, glass door knobs today are just cheap molded glass, whereas back in the day they were actually cut glass,” Haines says. “So that means anything brass and bronze and other metals that are decorative with intricate details — you just don’t see those today.” If you’re going to pull them out and donate them, it’s best to keep items together, especially with door knobs and latches.
