Rather than rip up the rule book on supercars, McLaren has delivered the 720S, the latest in its succession of smash hits. Here’s what you need to know about the beast developed in the English countryside that made its world debut today at the Geneva Motor Show.
It’s hard to believe that the 650S launched just three years ago in Geneva — but in the super-exclusive world of high performance, being stagnant is a death knell. It’s not as if we were tired of the 650S, but McLaren wanted to up the ante. The 720S arrives to replace the 650S, which evolved from the MP4-12C and 12C as the halo car in McLaren’s “Super Series” lineup. (The 570S and 570GT comprise the “Sports Series,” for now.)
Numbers Tell The Story
Like other McLarens, the 720S’ name is indicative of its output: 720PS, which translates to about 710 horsepower. That makes the 720S easily more powerful than the supercar it replaces — as well as nearly every other car on the road. Behind the increase is a 4.0-liter, biturbo V8, an evolution of the otherworldly 3.8-liter engine in current models. Weight is down by almost 100 pounds over the 650S, and McLaren expects a 0-to-60 time of 2.8 seconds. The company promises a top speed of 212 mph. We’re eager to verify that.
Strong First Impression
There’s no doubt that the 720S makes a strong design statement, and its cab-forward stance is a nod to even more powerful hypercars. The headlights and front air intakes aren’t just functional; they appear ready to swallow live prey whole. The 720S makes clever use of color, using a dark contrast roof to give the impression of a long, slinky body. Like many McLarens that have preceded it, the 720S launches in a gorgeous shade of orange, but we reckon that you’ll see them (in L.A., Miami, and Dubai, anyway) in a variety of colors. And, yes: the doors still open like this.
Priced To MoveMove
In the supercar stratosphere, price is rarely a limiting factor. The 720S is expected to launch with a base of $285,000, and loaded models will surely exceed 300 grand. Go ahead: ditch your studio apartment and get ready to lease the next, best McLaren. As the old saying goes, you can sleep in your car but you can’t drive your house to the track.
