3. For river runners: TR1-Trek by Astral
Astral is best known for making life jackets and water shoes that seasoned river guides won’t launch without, so it’s no wonder that its rugged TR1 hikers are designed for trail adventures close to the water. A beefed-up water shoe at heart, the Trek is made to survive being soaked—I love the water-shedding canvas upper, and the channels and ventilation designed to quickly remove water from the shoe. It’s light, airy, and comfortable enough when wet to wear all day, as I did on a recent rafting trip. When we stopped for some hikes up the canyon walls, though, the shoe’s burly 5mm lugged sole—made from a grippy rubber compound called G.15—deftly handled scree and clung to cliffs while the tough polyurethane bumpers on the toe and heel easily brushed off encounters with pointy rocks. They’re made a bit wide, so dudes with wide feet will feel right at home in these amphibious hikers.
