Outdoor gear retailer Backcountry has joined a wave of industry-wide backlash to Donald Trump’s executive order reviewing the status of a handful of National Monuments. The company’s CEO, Jonathan Nielsen, recently penned a letter on the front page of their website that spoke to the company’s commitment to outdoor recreation on public lands.
“Spending time outside is at the heart of our business and is central to the lives of our customers and employees alike…We have canyoneered through the tributaries of the Escalante, gazed up at sheer red walls while hiking through the Buckskin Gulch, and gained perspective seeing the geological layers of the White and Vermilion Cliffs on the horizon. These places are unparalleled in their unique beauty.”
The letter also calls for readers to submit their thoughts on the Department of Interior’s open forum regarding the order.
Of particular focus in Nielsen’s letter were Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments, both located in Backcountry’s home state of Utah. These monuments join a list of 27 total slated for review by Trump’s Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, who said previously, “there is no pre-determined outcome on any monument. I look forward to hearing from and engaging with local communities and stakeholders as this process continues.”
Backcountry has also partnered with The Nature Conservancy to support their Canyonlands Research Center facility, where scientists develop land-management solutions for the Colorado Plateau.
