Garmin Mini InReach
An InReach device has been a staple in the backcountry for years. It’s a satellite communicator that enables two-way messaging in places without cell service (once you purchase a subscription). The new Mini InReach weighs only 3.5 oz and is just 4 inches by 2 inches, and it pairs with your phone to put out an interactive SOS signal, send and receive text messages, and even download maps while out in the wilderness. Having a two-way device like this (rather than a one-way Personal Locator Beacon, or PLB) allows you to communicate with rescuers in an emergency, rather than just send them your location. Pro tip: Prior to using the InReach, you’ll need to create an account online that includes your emergency contacts. Don’t forget to tell these people where you’re headed before you leave, as it can help first responders locate you faster.
