The OtterBox Trooper LT 30 cooler is definitely a contender for best all-around backpack cooler of the bunch.
My favorite feature by far is the LT’s unique gate-mouth opening. It allows for quick and easy access to the whole interior—no wrestling with stiff zippers. Maneuvering the latch on top does take a bit of practice, but once you figure it out, it’s a snap to unlock and relock. (The plastic mechanism is also designed to simply pop off, rather than break, if the cooler is subjected to a nasty spill or something heavy falls on it.) It’s also a joy to carry: The two-inch-wide, foam-backed straps are extremely comfy and make carrying heavy loads less of a chore.
This tough, flexible soft cooler will work well in a variety of outdoor situations, especially when volume and hauling comfort are high on your priority list. It’s also the by far for easy access. If you’ll be using this cooler on a boat, or anticipate lots of folks reaching in frequently, then I’d advise picking this easy-access top over zipper-topped models.
