Leviton Decora Smart Wi-Fi LED DimmerGET IT
Here’s the thing smart home tech manufacturers seem to forget: the value of the user experience. Like you, I have a tech drawer (graveyard) filled with devices that were too cumbersome to return to once the novelty wears off. But after living with the Leviton Decora Dimmer for a few months, it’s clear that as much electrical engineering as the switch needed, the companion app got an equal amount of love from the UX side.
I wanted to schedule my exterior lights on/off before leaving on an extended vacation. Have you tried installing a programmable wall timer? Crouching down as you punch in the current time into a tiny LCD screen, what days you want the schedule to run, what hours—after installing one from my local big box store I took it out because it was such a pain to configure. I slipped the Leviton in (and really, it’s a pretty simple DIY install if you know how to cut power to the existing switch from the breaker), fired up the app, and within a few minutes set up a schedule that will adjust itself seasonally. It’s never failed and even when I switched WiFi networks, repairing it was a snap.
The app is very intuitive. But that’s not all this dimmer does. You could wire it to any light, then control it with your voice through Alexa or the Google Assistant. The next step is to add more to configure the living room’s lights to Netflix mode. — Sal Vaglica, Senior Editor
