LG 55EG9600 55-Inch 4K OLED TV: The Best Looking Television, Period
It’s a terribly corny and reductive thing to declare any single company as the winner of CES. But LG may have done just that. No other company presented as many standout, eye-catching products. We have a lot of LG to talk about, but let’s start with its new 4K OLED TVs. Despite the image quality advances touted by competitors, LG’s organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels delivered the deepest blacks of any TV we saw at the show. This isn’t much of a surprise. We came to the same conclusion after testing last year’s 55-inch OLED, an HD display whose image resolution couldn’t match that of 4K TVs, but whose inky black contrast levels were unmatched.
Because they don’t have a backlight sitting behind the screen, but rather emit light right from each pixel, OLEDs can legitimately turn off pixels, achieving true black. This improves almost every aspect of image quality, including cranking up the vibrancy of colors without distorting accuracy. Now, LG has added 4K resolution to its OLED TVs, as well as introducing both flat and curved models. We’re more excited about the marriage of these technologies, and the fact that OLED is apparently here to stay, than any single TV. But our pick from LG’s lineup is a curved 65-incher with a semi-transparent stand, giving the display a hint of levitation. It will be available this year for a price that hasn’t been announced, but that will no doubt make us weep.
